Dear Parents,
I can't believe that winter break is already upon us! The last month and a half went by very fast!
I didn’t send a newsletter last week due to the snow day last Friday. We very much enjoyed our field trip to the New England Aquarium and want to say a special thank you to Mrs. Sargent, Mrs. Ohol, and Mrs. Hatzis for chaperoning! It was a fun way to end our exciting unit on sea life!
We had a lot of fun celebrating Valentine’s Day today. We have enjoyed making our special Valentine’s projects and everyone certainly enjoyed opening all the valentines. Thank you all for the lovely valentines and especially for your support so far this year!
After vacation we will begin our fine arts unit where the children will creatively paint, draw, sculpt, and build works of art for our Kindergarten Museum. I will let you know when you can come in to see our museum! It will be either at the end of March or beginning of April. You won’t want to miss it! I think you will be amazed at the artwork your children will produce!
The Tuesday after vacation will be our 100th day of school. We have a lot of fun projects planned for that day. We will be doing a lot of counting that day. Your child is welcome to bring in a collection of 100 non-edible items (crayons, buttons, paper clips, pennies, etc.) that day to practice counting. Please put items in a baggie, labeled with your child’s name.
We spent a lot of time this past week working on persuasive writing. The students wrote letters to Mrs. Marsh and me trying to persuade us which animal we should get for a class pet. As of right now, we are trying to decide between a snake and turtles! We’ll see what is available from the Burlington Science Center after vacation! We will be transitioning to narrative writing after the break. Students will be writing about themselves and things/events that have happened in their lives (birthdays, field trips, new experiences, etc.). I am anxious to see how their writing with evolve over the next couple of months!
I realized this week that we haven’t gotten to the Scholastic Let’s Find Out Weekly Readers in a while. They are too good to just toss, though, so I sent a stack of them home with the students today. I know that a lot of parents are always looking for things to do with their children over vacations and snow days. The Let’s Find Out papers can be accessed online too and have wonderful resources and activities for the students to explore. The website is: www.scholastic.com/lfo. You have to click on Sign In and then Student. The password is Duncan2015. The January issues are in the archive and the February issues should come up right away.
I would also encourage you to continue working on the sight words and addition fluency facts with your children. We will be checking on their progress in the coming weeks after vacation.
Have a wonderful winter break!
Melanie Duncan
P.S...Please be sure to check the students’ backpacks and folders. Vacation is a great time to clean them all out!
Also...We will be going to the library the Wednesday after vacation. Please be sure to have your child return his/her book by then. Thanks!
